Robert Francis Monaghan passed away peacefully at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, on March 26th. He was born January 4, 1922 in Chicago to Francis J. and Ruth Carey Monaghan. He attended Mount Carmel High School and The University of Chicago until his college career was interrupted by World War II.
He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service as a member of the original Night Fighter Unit, Air Group 12, flying missions off the carrier U.S.S. Randolph.
Upon his discharge he earned his J.D. from Loyola University. He practiced law both as an Assistant United States District Attorney and later as a partner with Rathje, Kulp and Monaghan.
He was an owner and Director of Hawthorne Race Course, and a long-time member of The Chicago Athletic Association.
Mr. Monaghan is fondly remembered by many for his mentorship and coaching of various youth sports teams for both St. Phillip Neri Parish, South Shore and Infant Jesus of Prague, Flossmoor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of thirty years, Therese C. Monaghan. He now joins his first wife, Lois Jann Monaghan, in eternal peace. He is also survived by their six children, Robert F. Jr. (Kathy), Trumbull, CT; Maureen Hutchens (Brian), Newport News, VA; Carey Michael (Michele), Voorhees, NJ; Thomas Joseph, St. Louis, MO; Jann Reardon (John), Chicago, IL; and Brian Emmett (Susan), Woodridge, IL. He was the dear grandfather of seventeen and great-grandfather of seven. He is also survived by his brother, John T. Monaghan (late Nancy), Flossmoor, IL. He was a loving step-father to nine. He loved life, his family, and his piano.
A private burial is planned. The family will recieve visitors at Assumption Catholic Church, 323 West Illinois Street, on Saturday March 28th at 1:00P.M., with a Funeral Mass to follow at 3:00P.M.
